The Paige Barson Centre for Cerebral Palsy Children

Our primary goal for 2012 was to raise funds to open a newly revamped Occupational therapy paediatric wing at the Tambo Memorial Hospital in Benoni. We achieved our goal with the help of the Round Table (Golden East 181) and “The Paige Barson Centre for Cerebral Palsy Children” currently services 65 Cerebral Palsy children per month.

All of the children suffer with physical and/or mental disabilities. There is an additional group of children being looked after who all suffer from Down syndrome, Autism, or are severe burn victims needing therapy.

A programme has been developed with the hospital’s therapists to create a sustainable centre of excellence to cater for all the equipment and therapy needs of children in the East Rand, including the surrounding rural areas.

CP Kids Day Out

For 2 years running, The Paige Project has in partnership with Piza eVino hosted 13 kids suffering with CP at their Rosebank branch for a day of fun, music and pizza.

The days are a huge success and this can mainly be attributed to Piza eVino. Their management and staff get involved way beyond the call of duty and make each day something very special for the kids. The main objective of the day is to treat our CP friends to a really greatday out and show people that arranging something as small and simple as a day like that had the capabilities of not only bringing a smile to someone’s face, but helping others pull together as a team to support those less fortunate.

Below is a letter we received from Piza eVino after the event… it is testament to how it changed their lives.

Hi Dave

I can’t begin to tell you much that day effected us as a team and you have had a profound effect on all of us. What you guys do for them is amazing and we will gladly have them back anytime again.

From all of us a Piza e Vino we say thank you to you for granting us the opportunity of meeting them all.

The Hope School Computer Lab

In 2009, Rentworks, who are a market leader in technology rental finance solutions, chose as part of their CSI Initiative to contribute to the building of a computer lab for The New Hope School.

The New Hope School, which is a learning center for learners with special education needs, required such a computer lab to be created primarily to offer all learners the ability to specialise in computer skills – which will ultimately allow them to function in modern society.

The Paige Project approached Rentworks, who in turn graciously offered to donate to this cause.

Since the lab was erected, up to 7 lessons per day are held with 70% to 80% of learners that make up the school attending these lessons.

The Donald Fraser Hospital Project with Malamulele Onward

The Paige Project is dedicated to assisting other non-profit organisations on a voluntary basis as well as individuals in need.

In 2011 we funded a project in Limpopo in association with Malamulele Onward. The Initiative provides for therapy, equipment & caregiver training for 35 Children with Cerebral Palsy at the Donald Fraser Hospital, Vhembe District, Limpopo Province.

The project is still being maintained and hosted an additional 15 children in January 2012.

Sithandiwe

Early in 2014 a new craze called “Neknominations” hit Facebook. What started out as an online drinking game became a viral charity initiative and we accepted a challenge from Nando’s to step up and help out the Sithandiwe Centre in Alexandra, Johannesburg.

The people who run the centre go out every morning and evening and collect about 50 CP children so that they can receive care during the day while their parents go to work. They were limited with vehicles, so many trips had to be made. We took it upon ourselves to purchase the centre a VW Kombi which would allow them to transport the kids in a safer and more reliable way.

To top that, we arranged for our partners Cape Fruit to sponsor fruit and veg, every single week – forever!

Individual Projects

Since 2010, The Paige Project has also assisted individual kids and their specific needs with regards to orthopaedic wheelchairs and additional equipment. Many of these children come to us through our local therapists or through our website.
